Yan Lin Tay

Yan Lin is a Malaysian-born emerging visual artist based in Melbourne. Working intuitively through bold, imaginative compositions, her practice explores impermanence, vulnerability, and the shifting nature of identity, shaped by reflections on tensions between the individual and the collective.

Her works trace relationships between body, memory, and spirit through textured surfaces and ambiguous symbolism. Inspired by flesh-like fragments and irregular forms, she builds semi-illegible landscapes where unspoken emotions surface. Through spontaneity and material exploration, Lin transforms internal experiences into raw, captivating visual expressions.

“I Am Only Human After All” explores distorted bodily forms and fluid shapes that contrast with its restrained title. Inspired by a period of personal hardship, isolation, and difficulty finding resonance, the work reflects the tension of navigating complex internal states within normative expectations. Using irregular forms, shapes, and color, Lin translates experiences of self and internal conflict into a visual language of otherness and transformation, emphasising bodily autonomy and the fluidity of identity.
