Emma X Zhang

Emma X Zhang is a Melbourne/Naarm-based artist working across traditional/experimental mediums, light installation & live audiovisual performance. Her practice explores colour as a portal, transforming natural phenomena and personal archive into fragmented, hyper-real worlds that exist somewhere between memory and imagination. Recent exhibitions include Sorse Gallery and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery, with live performances for Platform Presents and SIRC-UIT, an upcoming exhibition at Whitehorse Artspace.

Through heat transfer and chemical reaction, this work reconstructs fragmented imagery

into a textured surface marked by gaps and discolouration. Each layer carries traces of

transformation, where the process itself—the heat, the transfer, the imperfect contact—

becomes essential to meaning. These accumulated marks echo digital compression,

revealing how acts of reproduction inevitably alter what they attempt to preserve.
