Michael Mclean

Melbourne-based photographer working with both digital and medium format film. While I enjoy all forms of photography, I have a particular interest in landscapes. I'm drawn to the quiet and focus the process requires, and I value the solitude that comes with it as much as the final image. My work is shaped by a deep appreciation for beautiful places, light, and the tactile process of being behind the camera.

I focused on examples of historic structures now obscured in the evolution of Melbourne. The first a boarded up shopfront that is now towered over by modern apartment buildings. It stands still, defiant with its elbows out.
The second an impression of a historic building that is now nothing but a indentation on a Chinese restaurant wall. Painted over and obscured but its indentation still signals to the observant that it was there.
I chose to use medium format film and a 1970's Mamiya to capture the visual feel of their time.
