Samira Stephens

Samira Stephens is a multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). She works across ceramics, textiles and small, carefully considered pieces, with a focus on slow and intentional making. Her work is created one of a kind or in small batches, exploring texture, form and subtle detail.

With a background in fashion and design, Stephens brings a strong sensitivity to material, surface and structure. Her work often plays with contrasts such as softness and structure, or delicate movement and durability. Through these tensions, she invites viewers to look more closely at the tactile qualities of her work.

Ruffle

Ceramic Stoneware, 2024.

28 x 16cm

$650

Ruffle responds to the theme of anomaly by intentionally deviating from expectations of ceramic form and surface. The layered folds resemble gathered fabric, appearing soft and fluid despite the hardness and permanence of stoneware.

The piece explores how drape and volume can be translated into clay. Irregular transitions replace symmetry and control, while the form remains functional. This work exists as an anomaly between a functional object and sculptural form.
